This website started Dec 2017 as a booklet when I asked “What is the effect of rape on the brain?” “Does the brain change as a result?”
We tried looking it up but was redirected to “The Effects of Trauma on the Brain.” After watching several U-tube videos, I slowly began to realize that Trauma is Trauma. It doesn’t matter through which door the trauma entered, the effect of any trauma follows the same patterns in producing brain chemicals which shut down the thinking process and change our behavior.
A five year old being bullied in kindergarten can experience the same traumatic effects as a veteran experiencing the full agony of war. They both suffer from a form of PTSD or shellshock. The source doesn’t matter. Trauma is Trauma having similar effects on the brain.
The question then, is how can we overcome these traumas and become healthy?
After realizing some of the damage caused by trauma, I started building a chart outlining the damage. It did not take long to realize that a one page chart would not cover the thoughts running through my head. I needed to expand each little square into a chapter. This is how that booklet came about.
I try to keep it simple as I learn to explain the complex. Later, through the catalyst of a friend, I realized a website would better help the thousands of people needing to hear what I am learning. This “Center” is the result.
It’s not hard really: We are damaged by life, we need to figure out or remember what health is and strive to be healthy. God designed our brain to heal, we simply need to learn how to allow it to heal. With the help of safe friends, we can become healthy again.
